Albert's Diamond Jewelers' owner Fred Halpern may be known for his business savvy, outrageous commercials and witty billboards, but closest to his heart is his charitable work for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The Halperns have been battling the incurable disease as Fred's wife, Donna, has been dealing with MS most of her life.
"It's devastating," Fred Halpern said. "I look at this woman who is so beautiful and full of life, but her everyday challenges are so demanding. It's really heart breaking."
Last week, more than 35 Albert's Diamond Jewelers' employees participated in a MS Walk that gathered more than 1,000 people to raise awareness of the baffling disease. They also will host the 12th annual Albert's Diamond Jewelers MS Auction at noon Sunday, Oct. 5, at Indiana Welcome Center, 7770 Corrine Drive, Hammond.
Last year the charitable auction raised more than $130,000 for research through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
"As difficult as our situation is, we have many blessings" Halpern said. "My wife never feels sorry for herself and always reminds us that somebody has it worse than she does. That type of spirit drives our family to help find a cure. It may not benefit us, but it may help someone else and we can live with that."
Unlike many charity and fundraising efforts, 100 percent of every dollar raised during the auction goes directly to MS. All event and promotional expenses are covered by Albert's, its friends, volunteers and partners.
"We are so very thankful to every business that steps up to the plate and helps with this cause," Halpern added. "The power of people coming together is amazing and we are so grateful to be part of something like this."
