How to Wear an Engagement Ring and Wedding Band

Wedding Band vs. Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is given as part of a marriage proposal. It generally has one central stone, which can be a diamond or other gemstone. These types of rings are meant to stand out and tend to be a bit flashier than traditional wedding bands.
Wedding bands are much simpler than engagement rings. A wedding band is given as part of the actual marriage ceremony. Both parties will receive one, so keep this in mind when shopping for rings. Typically, your band will match your partner’s, but you may also choose a different ring to match your personal style.
An engagement ring should be chosen before a proposal, while wedding bands need only be selected a few months before the wedding.
Once the wedding is over, you and your partner will continue to wear your wedding bands as a symbol of your love and commitment. If you received an engagement ring as well, you can continue to wear both rings.
Wedding Band and Engagement Ring Order
If you have both an engagement ring and a wedding band, you may be wondering what order to wear them on your hand. Typically, the wedding band goes beneath the engagement ring on the same finger. This is so the band is closest to the heart.
If your rings don’t pair well together, you can opt to wear them on separate hands. Some people also choose to wear their wedding band daily and only bring out their engagement ring on special occasions.
What Hand Does Your Wedding Ring Go On’
In Western cultures, the engagement ring is worn on the fourth finger, or ring finger, of your left hand. Historically, the ring is on the left because it was thought that the fourth finger has a vein running directly to the heart. This is also known as the vein of love.
